General Questions

1. I've never read the Pern books - can I play here?
YES! We have a repository of information about life on Pern, and we're happy to answer any and all questions - no matter how silly you might think they are! We can help you get to grips with the setting and play with us!

2. I've never played on a forum before!
We have players from all sorts of backgrounds - play by email, MU*S, forums. As long as you have a willingness to learn, we can guide you through getting used to a different game format.

3. What are the activity requirements?
We do not have any posting activity requirements (save for more important character types that need to be posted with somewhat regularly to move plots forward and so forth). We send out reminder emails to players who have not logged in for 3 months (if you have no characters) and 6 months (if you do), then delete accounts if there is no response to these emails.

4. What is the site's rating?
Everything on the site must be PG-13. This is to satisfy Proboard's terms of service. If you wish to role-play anything beyond this rating, please take it off the site.

5. Who are the admins?
A list of our current staff can be found here.

6. What time scale does Solaria Weyr use?
We run on 2:1 time - so for every one month in real life, two months pass in the game. We measure in-character time with seasons, with the current season under the navigation bar.

7. What is bling and what do I do with it?
Bling is our out-of-character currency. Players automatically earn one bling per post in an in-character forum (so when you are playing your characters). Bling is also earned through other means, such as games and participating in certain events. It can be used to buy certain things, such as restricted character types, promotions for crafters, and fire-lizards, in the shop.

8. What is fuzzy time and how does it work?
Fuzzy time means setting a topic in a time that is not the current season.
For example, the current season is Late Summer, P8 T15, but you want to write a topic that took place in Early Winter, P8 T14. By putting 'Early Winter, P8 T14' in the first post, you establish where the topic takes place in the game's timeline.

Setting

9. When in Pern's timeline is Solaria Weyr set?
We are playing at the beginning of the 8th Pass of Thread - the Pass before the Long Interval during which Lessa came back to bring forward the "Oldtimers". Pern has just come out of the 7th Interval.

10. What crafts are playable on Solaria Weyr?
We have a list of crafts currently in our canon here.

11. What are the plot lines? How can my characters get involved?
The current plotlines at Solaria are:
• Women's rights progression - The ongoing progress of women's rights at Weyr, Hold, and Hall. Some areas are still more traditional, but progressive ideals are becoming more commonplace. Rights advance and decline depending on leadership, especially at the Weyr.
• Solaria and Mathon's Relationship - Ever since the unfought Threadfall, the relationship between the Weyr and Hold has been difficult. Many Mathonites still harbour deep resentment towards the Weyr for their part, while others are beginning to let go of this. The leaderships in each area and their interactions are important to the current relationships.
• Dragonhealing - Goldrider Reva has been training younger members of the Weyr in dragon healing, formerly a skill only shared by gold riders. This plot will eventually lead to dragonhealing becoming a formal craft.
• Dolphins - Dolphins (formerly known as shipfish) have interacted with a small number of people. A plot is ongoing to establish a working relationship between humans and dolphins, and eventually a craft.

12. I have a plot I want to play. How do plots get approved?
Most plots develop organically as a result of chat in the cbox. If a plot has the potential to affect a large number of characters, we ask that you PM the admins to discuss how best to run it. Once approval has been given, you are now in charge of running the plot. You can ask admins and other players for help if needed. Smaller plots that will only affect a few characters do not usually need to have approval unless you want to discuss them with an admin.

13. Do you have whers here?
We do. Our whers are based on those found in the first books of the series, and are working animals only. They do not 'Impress', and do not take the name of their handler. They don't have any flight or Thread-fighting ability, and are used as guard animals for Holds, and for heavy work in mines due to their ability to see in low light conditions.

Characters

14. How many characters can I have?
We have no restrictions on total numbers of characters. Some character types are limited to certain numbers per player - check the rules for current limitations.

15. Can I make a candidate?
Yes, but they must have a job that they undertake between clutches. We recommend not having a character's whole personality be candidate-focused, and make them more balanced in case they do not Impress. This will make them easier and more fun to play between clutches.

16. Can I start with a dragon?
Yes, you can - but check the current information to see which character types are currently restricted.

17. Can I play a goldrider?
Yes you can - but your character must Impress them on game. Whether or not a clutch will hatch a gold dragon depends on how many active gold dragons the Weyr currently has, and the applications received for gold candidates.

18. Can I have a Master crafter?
The overall Master of a whole craft (like Robinton was MasterHarper) - no. These are NPCs that are played as needed, which isn't very often at all. A crafter who has reached Master level - yes. At this time in Solaria's history, only men progress to Master (though that's not to say this won't change in the future!) They must also be an appropriate age to have achieved their master rank - no younger than 30.

19. Can I have a Hears all Dragons/Whers/Flitts?
No.

20. How do I adopt a character?
First pick the character you would like to adopt. We have an extensive list sorted by type here.
The character may have some information written about them, which you should use as the basis for a full profile for them. You do this as you would for an original character, using the information found here.
If the character you're adopting is related to a character played by another member, it is polite to work with that member to discuss the character and get a thumbs up on their profile, to make sure it matches things mentioned in the existing character's profile.

21. Are the admins the in-character leadership?
No! Anyone can play a leadership character.

22. How do I (even if I'm not aiming for it) 'earn/work' my character into a leadership role, how are those chosen etc?
When a leadership role becomes available, a topic will go up asking for people to express their interest and put forward characters for the role. Some roles may have certain requirements of the characters, for example, a potential Wingleader may need at least five Turns of riding experience. Some leaders are decided by site votes, while Wingleaders and Wingseconds are decided by the Weyrleader players.
Commitment to the game goes a long way, and being an active member of the community will stand you in good stead for a leadership role if you choose to aim for one.

Dragons and Fire-Lizards

23. Are dragon Impressions linked to gender?
They are - golds, greens, and rarely blues Impress women. Bronzes, browns, blues, and greens Impress men.

24. Are dragon Impressions based on sexuality?
No - sexuality does not matter to our dragons.

25. When's the next hatching?
We have numerous hatchings a year - a schedule is available in this topic.
Usually we have 2 PC hatchings per out of character year here, or one per in character Turn. The number of NPC hatchings varies depending on the number of golds in the Weyr at a time, but each gold will rise, on average, once per out of character year.

26. What's the difference between a PC and NPC clutch?
PC hatchings are run by a group of 4-6 players, who are known as the Search Committee (SCo). The SCo members decide which characters Impress dragons, and to which colours, by democratic vote. They then write the dragons for each Impressing character, and run the hatching. This is the main way in which PC characters Impress on Solaria. These hatchings occur 'on-camera'- that is, they are played out from flight through to hatching.
We also have numerous NPC hatchings every year to accurately reflect and bolster the total number of dragons in the Weyr. However, these clutches happen 'off-camera' - usually only the hatching is played out in a short form, and less "fuss" is made of these clutches by the players. None of the dragons and riders are given names, so they offer blank slots for when people are choosing a hatching when creating a dragonrider character. PC characters can Impress at these clutches by buying Impressions from the shop.

27. How does Search work here at Solaria?
We have both played and non-played hatchings at Solaria Weyr. Characters can be candidates for both, but the main focus is on the played hatchings.
For a played clutch, after the Flight an announcement will be made with the candidate application forms. Any character submitted is automatically a candidate - you can play out their Search, but it is not required.
Characters remain as candidates until they Impress, are too old to be candidates, or choose not to be candidates any more. In between clutches, they will undertake their normal jobs, or may take on a new job at Solaria if they're not originally from the Weyr. They may be candidates for non-played clutches, but Impressions for these clutches are bought from the shop, whereas for played clutches a committee chooses candidates for Impression and writes dragons for them.

28. Do I have to pay for an Impression?
The only time that you have to pay for an Impression is when buying one from an NPC clutch for an existing character. Prices can be found in the shop. Gold Impressions and female blue Impressions cannot be bought from NPC clutches.

29. How long does Weyrlinghood last?
Eighteen months in character; nine months out of character.

30. When do Weyrlings move out of the Barracks?
No earlier than twelve months in character. The Weyrling class will have their flight exams at this point, and those who pass will be able to move out of the barracks and into their own weyrs. However, some weyrlings may be held back by the Weyrlingmasters for particular reasons, such as behaviour. This is always decided by asking the weyrlings' players if they wish for their weyrlings to pass or not. Weyrlings whose players are inactive automatically pass.

31. How do I get a firelizard?
There are two ways to get fire-lizards:
1. Buy them using Bling from the shop, for a character at any stage of creation (approved or work in progress).
2. Have your character receive a fire-lizard from a clutch hosted by another player. You do not have to pay Bling for these fire-lizards.

32. Do you have white dragons?
We have no white dragons, and currently do not have any plans to have any.

33. Can I have my dragon Time it?
No.

34. Can dragons use telekinesis?
No.

35. Can my fire-lizard have a clutch?
YES! More information can be found in this topic. In short: request a flight so that admins can make sure they are well-spaced; observe the possible clutch distributions; don't give your own characters fire-lizards from a clutch that you are running.

36. How do I go about having my green dragon rise to mate?
Check the upcoming flights and make a request in that topic for a flight in a time that will not clash with an upcoming flight.
