About Us
Solaria Weyr is a role-playing forum based on the 'Dragonriders of Pern' series of books.
A knowledge of the series is useful, but not essential, to join here.
We are a fairly small, but nevertheless active game, with friendly members from a variety of timezones. If you're a guest with questions, please don't hesitate to ask in the cbox - we all love answering questions!
The forum's admins are in the UK, so don't be alarmed if they aren't online during the US evening or night. The time zone on the Cbox and the board's default time zone are GMT, for reference.
We are using a collapsible categories code; please click the name of a category (e.g. "Solaria Weyr") to expand that category and view all the boards within it. Thank you.

Weyrbowl (2 sub-boards) For the most part, the Weyrbowl is totally open. A mixture of rock and sand, scarred by many thousands of dragon claws pushing off and touching down, it contains a lake and feeding ground at one end, and a wide, low tunnel for ground entry and exit at the other. Dragons are constantly landing and and taking off from the bowl for various reasons: conveying passengers, performing, preparing for or returning from sweeps, drills, or Search - these are just a few things that take place often here. The Wings also gather here for Thread.
Hatching Grounds More than large enough for a gold clutch of forty plus eggs, as well as candidates and the dam and sire of the clutch, the hatching grounds are set in the side of the extinct volcano. The fine Istan sands, flown in especially from the island of the same name, lie on the ledge of rock that forms the base of the grounds. The sands are constantly heated by warmth that rises from the core of the planet and circulates just below the ledge. Tiers of seats able to accommodate the Weyr's entire population, as well as visitors, are carved into the stone sides of the cone. Plenty of glows illuminate the Grounds for nighttime occurrences, while daylight streaming in through the various openings leading into it illuminate it otherwise. Moderator: Event
Weyrling Barracks The weyrling barracks is long, large room off the weyrbowl, big enough to house upwards of sixty weyrlings at any one time. However, due to smaller clutch numbers and frequencies in the Interval, only the front half of the barracks is in used. The other, unused half at the back is dim, the cots, couches and presses now empty for many Turns. Every weyrling gets a cot and a press of their own, while their young dragons have a couch beside the cot. Vats of oil are arranged in an open space in the middle of the barracks, along with large tables for the preparation of meat. The weyrlingmaster's office is halfway along the barracks.
Accommodation (2 sub-boards) People have to have somewhere to call their own. For most weyrfolk, shared rooms and dormitories in the lower caverns are the norm. Married couples, families and posted crafters are usually lucky enough to have a larger room to themselves, also in the lower caverns. Riders lay claim to weyrs in the bowl wall, with higher ranking riders having larger weyrs. The only weyrs to have plumbed bathing facilities are those of the Weyrwomen and Weyrleader, these also being the biggest weyrs. Moderator: Emma
Courtyard Ketrin's courtyard is large and open on one side. The paved floor is always kept clean and tidy, but many Turns of use have made their mark on it.
Dining Hall Ketrin's dining hall is a grand affair: high-ceilings, this large room is decorated with many tapestries depicting events in the Hold's past, as well as images of the Hold as it is now, with its fields and buildings. A large tapestry of the race track is particularly prominent, with a race in full swing depicted in it.
Stables The large, low stables house the Hold's runnerbeasts. The building has the earthy smell of the beasts and their associated items, though the tack room in the middle smells strongly of leather.
Beast Barns The main place of work for the herders, this is where the herdbeasts stay when not out to graze. Birthings, check-ups, medicine administration, and most other health-related tasks take place in the large building. It always smells strongly of animals, something that some people find off-putting.
Accommodation There are a variety of different places for people in the Hold to live. Some people occupy rooms within the main Hold - usually crafters or those with higher-ranking jobs, such as the steward. Single people who work in the main Hold often have small single rooms, or share with others in the Hold proper or small dwellings just outside the main Hold. Further out, larger dwellings for families can be found, usually attached to land that the families tend to.
Dining Hall The dining hall is a centre of activity during meal times, and people can often be found here during their free time. The hall itself is a large, high-ceilinged room located roughly in the middle of the Hall. As yet, it is not decorated or furnished.
Courtyard The Hall's courtyard is a large affair, enough that a couple of bronzes could fit in it with ease. The floor is laid with stones, and a decorative path winds around a centrepiece of a large tree with bright blossoms.
Garden The Hall's garden is a pleasant place to go to eat lunch outside, take a stroll, or have a sit down. You'd be hard-pressed to do the last option right now though - the wooden benches haven't been made yet. All the flora has been planted though, and it's a beautiful place with a gravel path winding through it.
Teaching Rooms The teaching rooms for the Hall. All rooms have good acoustics, as they are used for a variety of tasks: solo singing, choral tasks, theory, and instrument playing, among others.
Workshop The large workshop is where instrument making is taught and carried out. Instruments will eventually decorate every wall, and sand tables for designs will be moved in. For now, the room is depressingly empty.
Copyroom The copyroom is used for copying scores and scribing, and sometimes for writing scores and taking tests. At the moment, the large copyroom is very empty, as it has no furniture.

Quarters Apprentices live in dormitory-like rooms - all the better for the apprenticemaster to keep an eye on them when they're not at lessons! Journeymen and above have their own quarters, though journeymen's are considerably smaller than those of the masters.
Mathon Hold The second largest Hold in Solaria Weyr's coverage area, Mathon is located south and to the east of Solaria Weyr. It is too far inland to enjoy a good proximity to the coastline, but is instead just beside a large river that supplies it with both water and freshwater fish. The cotholds are relatively close to the main Hold, though a few are found on the other side of the river. The Hold has a large population of skilled weavers, and produces many fine fabrics including a linen perfect for the southern weather. It is renowned for its expansive orchards of tropical fruits, and Lord Teron has a great interest in producing the finest produce through selective breeding of the trees.
Rainforest Damp, at times foggy, but always warm, these leafy trees contrast greatly with the dark forests of northern Pern. The trees stretch higher than any seen on Pern, and in their branches are many different ecosystems and animal cultures. There are at least three distinct levels of the rainforest: the main floor, the mid trees, and the high canopy. Each can also be divided into sections but as few people choose to live there not much else is known about the creatures and their habits. In the denser areas of forest where the trees reach their highest and crowd each other, the forest floor is a very dark and dangerous place to be, especially at night. With the Lake centred in the middle, most do not dare venture any further, afraid of getting lost, or worse - what may lie there.
Solaria Cove This cove is large in size, with varying waves depending on sea conditions. The beach is a wide expanse of finely graded sand, causing it to be soft to the touch. The sand continues down into the water, and about five dragonlengths from the shore, the water is shallow, suitable for younger children to play in. The water is the blueish-green of the sea, but is clear, though not as clear as the lake in the Weyrbowl. Another of Solaria's relaxing hangouts, the beach provides many hours of fun for people, children and dragons, the latter enjoying the lovely sunning conditions.
Orchard Filled with redfruit and mango trees, and with a large vegetable plantation, there's always something ripening here no matter what the season. The orchard is always busy with regular workers keeping the conditions just right for the crops, but also the odd observer can also be found wandering the rows and rows of plantation.
